Science Curriculum Area

This is an exciting time in the world of Science with new developments and breakthroughs arising every day. Within the science department we strive to enthuse our students to understand the wonders that are emerging and recognise how they impact on our everyday lives.

We are lucky at Pittville in having six large, well-equipped science laboratories, each having its own interactive whiteboard. We are keen to involve students in practical work and, through the support of our technicians, are able to deliver a wide range of interesting and challenging experiments which enthuse our students whilst supporting their more theoretical learning. Students’ work is celebrated through eye-catching displays which enhance the quality of the learning environment in Science. During the year, we also offer students the opportunities to take part in extra-curricular activities such as the visiting the Cheltenham Science Festival with ‘Gifted and Talented’ students. Students’ progress is of paramount importance to the Science staff and the use of tracking systems at both key stages allows us to monitor each individual student’s performance in relation to their targets from the beginning of Year 7 right through to the end of Year 11. Support for struggling or under-performing students can then be efficiently allocated, whilst celebration and rewards can be issued to those doing well. Students are encouraged to monitor their own progress in Science through the use of ‘book trackers’ in which test/examination marks are recorded and targets set.
