Welcome to the Geography Department
Welcome to Pittville geography department. We are made up of four specialist geography teachers who enjoy the challenge of equipping our students with the skills and understanding of making them responsible, well-rounded 21st century citizens who are able to make well informed decisions on the most important issues that we face such as climate change, the destruction of our ecosystems and closing the development gap.
We have been the most popular option to take at KS4 in Pittville geography as we feel that students find our KS3 curriculum relevant, exciting and filled with plenty of opportunities for outdoor learning. Some examples of recent fieldtrips some of our students have undertaken have been to the bay of Naples, Barcelona, Eden Project and the natural history museum. At KS4 students follow the AQA A GCSE curriculum which is split into three exams which they undertake at the end of year 11.
Our KS3 & KS4 curriculum have been planned to become a fluid five-year curriculum for those who opt it at KS4. We assess the students using the following assessment objectives which we support our students to improve on.
AOB 1 – Knowledge of places and facts
AOB 2 – Geographical understanding
AOB 3 – Geographical conclusions
AOB 4 – Geographical skills
Within each unit at KS3 we have made curriculum links with other subjects at Pittville school so that students can transfer and build on their knowledge and skills to support progress in all subjects. There is a particular focus on key geographical skills such as map reading, statistical analysis and graph interpretation. We also place a strong emphasis on gateway words such as development and climate change which are regularly used and there understanding checked as they give students a deep understanding of the subject, and once embedded, can be used in subsequent learning.
How can parents support their child in geography?
