Welcome to the Performing Arts Department


Drama is an integral part of our school curriculum. All pupils receive an hour a week, in which, to explore, create and develop their individual imagination.

Within the drama department we offer a wide range of topics at KS3 level. These have been designed to teach not only drama skills and encourage cultural capital, but also to develop transferable life skills. We adopt a gentle approach to lessons, to encourage and nurture confidence within the students. We have clear expectations in all lessons, with an emphasis on commitment, consideration for others and creating a safe environment in whihch to be creative.

The Drama curriculum is a strategically designed five year plan, which supports the seamless transition from primary level. We are very conscious that many students may never been involved in drama before and are all at different levels of ability. Therefore, the topics covered are varied, but scaffolded to support students that decide to take the subject for GCSE.

As in all subjects at Pittville, Drama strives to challenge the students, encouraging them to achieve their full potential. The topics covered over KS3 are varied. We start by introducing the year 7’s to techniques, moving on to how live theatre productions work. By the end of year 9, we have moved on to studying text and creating characters.

We study AQA Drama at KS4. This course consists of three components, each allowing students to deepen and develop their knowledge of theatre. The specification engages and encourages students to become confident performers and designers with the skills they need for a bright and successful future.

As part of studying Drama here at Pittville, we offer many opportunities to see theatre, whether this is during the first year, when we all go and see a pantomime at the Everyman, making trips to the London West End or travelling to New York to see a show on Broadway.

We also have an annual school production, which involves all year groups and encourages everyone to be a part of the wider school community.

We run a KS3 drama club at lunchtimes and have drama support sessions after school for our GCSE pupils.

In all our drama lessons we hope to instill the confidence to be oneself as well as the freedom to achieve.

How can Parents support their child in Drama?

  • Please encourage your child in drama by being positive about the subject.
  • Reading as well as watching stories will help your child’s creative thinking skills.
  • If possible, take your child to the theatre.
  • Encourage your child to talk about what they did in lessons, ask questions and celebrate their achievements.


Music at Pittville school is based in the Performing Arts complex which houses a music classroom, a music technology suite, and three practice rooms. The music curriculum strives to create a confident, creative, and resilient learner who can collaborate successfully with others to produce innovative and imaginative work. Our aim is to inspire, challenge and excite our students as to the wealth of possibilities in music, both inside and outside of a classroom context. In addition, we integrate the skills developed in other curriculum areas such as drama, maths, art and MFL into the learning.

Additionally, we aim to support our Year 7’s with the transition from primary school. Before joining Pittville, the opportunities to explore music may have been limited which results in varied levels of ability and experiences. Therefore, the learning is scaffolded to support every student in a safe learning environment.

Studying Music at KS3, you will:

  • Learn to perform, analyse, and evaluate music across a range of genres, styles, and contexts.
  • Learn skills on piano and ukulele, learn singing and how to use percussion instruments.
  • Learn to compose music on your own, in groups and by utilising our specialist music technology suite.
  • Explore how music is created, produced, and communicated through terms such as melody, dynamics, tempo, structure, harmony, rhythm, texture, and a variety of musical notations.

Our GCSE course follows the Eduqas music syllabus, featuring 3 key components:

  • Component 1: Performance (30%) Students will perform two pieces of music in any style, one solo piece and one ensemble (group) piece.
  • Component 2: Composing (30%): Students will compose two pieces of original music using our music technology suite. One piece based upon a brief from the Eduqas exam board, the other is open to the student’s own decision of their brief.
  • Component 3: Listening and Appraising (40%): Students will analyse two set works from the four areas of study and evaluate a variety of musical pieces using the musical elements.


  • We have a dedicated team of 7 instrumental tutors who currently provide lessons for guitar, piano, drums, strings, woodwind, and vocals.
  • There are many opportunities to be involved in the wider school community through our weekly musical clubs which include, choir, orchestra, Year 7 music group, string group, music theory group, music technology club and a whole school Pittville Jazz band.
  • We work alongside the drama department to present an annual school production, which is open to all our year groups.

How can Parents support their child in Music?

  • Please encourage your child to attend weekly instrumental lessons and ensure they are practising outside of school.
  • Listen to a variety of music and music genres, encouraging discussions of key features and instrumentation.
  • Where possible, take your child to concerts, live shows and the theatre. This will help build their contextual knowledge of musical eras and genres.
  • Encourage your child to perform in school concerts/events and join our musical clubs, this will help with their confidence and performance abilities.
  • Maintain consistent revision of class materials and revision booklets.
  • Maintain regular contact with the class teacher, ask for feedback and updates.
